Practical Tan Tui
If your Tan Tui is good, your gong fu is good.
Late Qing dynasty China was often a violent place and many took up the martial arts. People would 下功夫 xià gōngfū or “put in the hard work” to gain the fighting skills of 拳術 Quánshù (boxing). Chinese Boxing consists of 踢 Ti “kicking”, 打 Da “striking”, 摔 Shuai “throwing” (wrestling) and 拿 Na “seizing” (catch, joints locks). For northern Chinese boxing systems, this often involved a 長拳 Cháng quán “Long Fist” or “Long Boxing” approach to commanding the distance and pummeling the enemy. Striking methods were blended with wrestling. These were versatile combat methods, meant to allow one to duel a challenger, defend oneself against attackers, or eliminate threats swiftly. By the end of the Qing dynasty civilian fighting arts reached a high point in effectiveness. One particular set of 套路 Tàolù (form, sequence, war dance) was considered an extremely good beginner skill set: 彈腿 Tan Tui.
However, many people don’t know how to utilize the fighting skills in Tan Tui

As we know, China was further plunged into war, famine, and the Cultural Revolution - forever changing the cultural context within which “kung fu” evolved. Nationalist fervor gripped the people and efforts were made to save the martial arts - one such initiative was the highly influential Chinwoo Athletic Association. However the changing of the context, societal collapse and then rapid urbanization, neo-Confucian values, gentrification, and the need to survive in the modern economy have all led to serious decay in the Chinese boxing skills and the extinction of many folk fighting arts.
Vincent Tseng (The Wandering Warrior) comes from a background practicing Chinwoo forms and a mixture of Seven Star and Eight Step Mantis Boxing as well as the weaponry. He later went on to train Shuai Jiao (Sino-Manchu Wrestling) and it’s older brother Mongolian Wrestling as well as diving into Hokkien-Taiwanese martial arts: Kuntao. In order to revive the efficacy of Traditional Chinese Martial Arts he went back to his roots to one of the most significant forms in Chinese Boxing’s recent history, the widely disseminated and often misunderstood Tan Tui, and trained it deeply in order to formulate Practical Tan Tui.
